Ha Duong and Jonathan Lapuz both began attending the University of California Riverside in 2000 and moved into the West Lothian resident hall before the Fall quarter began. They were placed in the same dormitory section but had rooms that were situated at opposite ends of the hallway. The day after the move in, all the hall residents were assembled to go over typical community introductions and elect student representatives. Ha did not attend this first meeting but Jonathan did. When it came time to select a hall representative, Jonathan was nominated by his roommate as a hilarious dare. In an effort to satisfy the challenge, Jonathan proceeded to give a "bullshit" speech that won the majority vote and beat out two other candidates that were more willing to take the job. Stuck with the new found responsibility, Jonathan went on to begrudgingly spend some of his nights representing his hall at various meetings. As October rolled around the representatives were given a task to sell Halloween candy to residents for distributing to visiting children. Having already sold to his immediate hall neighbors, Jonathan needed to sell the rest of his candy stock before he could get back to drinking and playing Counter Strike. He eventually found his way to the opposite end of the hall where he knocked on Ha's door and changed his life forever....
